Govt to Reduce Admission Percentile by 15% via NEET   Posted Date:  11-05-18

The National Eligibility cum Entrance Test (NEET) is well known for being in the highlights for over past few years; because of undergoing frequent and last moment changes in its guidelines. Following this trend, the cutoff percentile of the NEET-PG (Post Graduate) and Super Specialty (SS) has been dropped by 15%.

This decision has been taken based on a guideline issued by the Union Health Ministry, GOI, in order to take up unoccupied seats in the medical colleges. This decision is going to benefit over 18,000 aspirants by making their dream come true of becoming specialized doctors.

This change is amended to occupy the probable vacant medical seats across the country for the PG courses. The declaration of cutoff reduction was made by Honourable Union Health Minister, Shri JP Nadda announced Friday.

As per regulations and eligibility criteria, for admission in any postgraduate course, “it shall be necessary for a candidate to obtain a minimum of marks at 50th percentile” in NEET PG.

The Scheduled Caste (SC), Scheduled Tribes (ST) and Other Backward Caste (OBC) category candidates scoring marks at or above the 40th percentile will be eligible for getting admissions to the various medical institutions. Additionally, the Persons with Disabilities (PWD) category aspirants would be eligible when they would have secured the marks at or above the 45th percentile.

This change is aimed at ensuring that all the PG medical seats in India are picked up and those are not wasted. The honourable Minister added to his statement - “This is a significant step towards strengthening the medical sector and indicates the priority given by the government to the health sector. We are making sure that there is adequate manpower for providing quality health services.”

    • Similar kind of cutoff reduction by 7.5 percentile was also implemented in June 2017, when the medical seats for 2017-18 were left unoccupied.
    • With that change, the cutoff of the General category candidates was brought down from 50th percentile to 42.5th percentile.
    • For SC, ST and OBC category candidates, the percentile was reduced from 40th percentile to 32.5th percentile.
    • While for PWD category candidates from the 45th percentile to 37.5th percentile.

However, that decision was declared to be applied only for the session starting the academic year 2017-18. This rule is now reintroduced for this year considering the possibility of medical seat vacation for the PG courses.
