It has been specially set up to conduct advanced research and training in English and foreign languages (Arabic, Chinese, French, German, Spanish, Italian, Russian, Japanese, Korean, Persian, Turkish) in the areas of Teacher Education, Literature, Linguistics, Interdisciplinary and Cultural Studies.

The English and Foreign Languages University was founded with the singular vision of developing competency building teacher education and training in the country. The mandate of the University is to advance and disseminate“instructional, research and extension facilities in the teaching of English and Foreign Languages and Literatures in India” as well as “to take appropriate measures for interdisciplinary studies and research in literary and cultural studies, and to develop critical intercultural understanding of civilizations.”

With its unique mandate to build teacher competency in language and literary pedagogy, the university has steadily enhanced its expertise in areas of language education, pedagogical and evaluative methods, material production, the sciences of linguistics and phonetics, in English and Foreign Languages. Three generations of teachers from primary to tertiary levels from across the country and abroad were trained at CIEFL/EFLU.

History

The English and Foreign Languages University, Hyderabad, was founded in 1958 as the Central Institute of English (CIE). Giving shape to Pandit Jawaharlal Nehru’s (India’s first Prime Minister) vision to set up an institution to impart quality training in English for teachers, the mandate of the University is to advance and disseminate “instructional, research and extension facilities in the teaching of English and Foreign Languages and Literatures in India” as well as “to take appropriate measures for interdisciplinary studies and research in literary and cultural studies, and to develop critical intercultural understanding of civilizations.”

In addition to regular Teacher Training Programmes, CIE set benchmarks through its various conferences, refresher courses, and syllabus design ventures. During this time, the Institute also initiated indigenous English education programmes by producing school text books and later radio lessons.

Gradually the Institute extended the scope of its goals, viz., to improve the standard of English Teaching; to undertake relevant research; and to publish materials, to foreign languages. It was therefore renamed the Central Institute of English and Foreign Languages (CIEFL) in 1972 with the addition of three major foreign languages – German, Russian and French.

In 1973, CIEFL was awarded the status of a deemed university. Venturing into newer territories like curriculum development, evaluation, and methodology researches, two new campuses were set up at Shillong (1973) and Lucknow (1979) to include a larger population in its activities.

Furthering its achievements in the use of radio and moving into television, the Educational Media Research Center (EMMRC) was established at CIEFL in 1984, with the objective to design and telecast programmes in all subjects.

In 2006, CIEFL was given central university status and accordingly, came to be called the English and Foreign Languages University, by an act of the Parliament.

Dedicated to the study of English and foreign languages, it is the only one of its kind in South Asia. It has been specially set up to conduct advanced research and training in English and foreign languages (Arabic, Chinese, French, German, Spanish, Italian, Russian, Japanese, Korean, Persian, Turkish) in the areas of Teacher Education, Literature, Linguistics, Interdisciplinary, and Cultural Studies.

Today, the EFL University has 7 schools and 26 Departments. Apart from graduate, postgraduate, and Research programmes, EFLU offers postgraduate diplomas, and distance and part time mode courses.

The aim of establishing this campus was to cater to the linguistic and research needs of the region as well as to provide quality training for teachers.[3]

EFLU Lucknow campus

Situated on the banks of Gomti, the Lucknow campus is housed in the Moti Mahal Campus, RanaPratap Marg, Lucknow. A city with a magical charm, Lucknow has a unique ability to assimilate the new into the old, to look to the present and the past.

The EFL University Campus at Lucknow was started in 1979 to provide training to university/college teachers of English in northern India, but it slowly emerged as a full-fledged Centre offering PG Diploma in the Teaching of English, degree and research programmes. The campus has been actively engaged in conducting refresher courses for university and college teachers, proficiency courses for a wide spectrum of learners and contact programmes for the participants of Postgraduate Certificate course in the Teaching of English. The campus also offers a Postgraduate Diploma in Communication. All programmes run by the Campus are face-to-face and are not offered through the distance mode. The campus has its own library and hostel.

Establishment of new campuses

According to The English and Foreign Languages Universities Act, 2006, the university may establish campuses at other places. The university has four campuses functioning at Hyderabad, Malappuram, Lucknow and Shillong. Since the university has an all-India mandate, the university aims to become India’s first truly multi-campus university. The idea behind opening new campuses is to reach out to the people who live outside the metropolitan cities, and do not have access to higher education. Hitherto a majority of Indians have been deprived of English and foreign languages and have therefore been unable to match those educated in urban public/convent schools. By setting up new campuses within their reach, the university will help them to overcome that handicap.

Ramesh Mohan Library

The Ramesh Mohan Library was established in 1958 to provide bibliographical, documentation and information support to the teaching and research programmes of the University. The Library moved into its new building in July 1988. The main objective of the Library is to provide information of books, journals, theses and other related documents relevant to the academic and research needs of the University. These materials are organised according to system of Dewey Decimal Classification on the shelves, and provides access to these materials through Online public access catalog (OPAC).

The Library has about 1,60,914 books and other reading materials, about 202 academic and research iournals and 1,485 M.Phil. / Ph.D. theses submitted by the Research Scholars. There is a small collection of books in Indian languages and Audio-visual materials.
